Can I buy a used car, get title signed over, but wait on registering the car and getting insurance?
I have a friend who has the money for a car, eyes on a particular used car, but cannot afford to do the insurance and registration right now. Can she just buy it. Pay the guy cash and have him sign over the title to her but keep it in her driveway until her next check so she can get the money to go to the DMV and register it in her name and pay for the insurance and all ( actually have the current owner drive it to her house since he has insurance on it currently ) Would that be legal?

- Yes to all the questions, she doesn't have to register and insure it right away once it's parked off the street
- anything that happens will go back to the prior owner being that he is the last one listed. it could be alot of headaches for him even w/ a signed title
- Yes, it's perfectly legal. Some towns have laws about keeping unregistered cars around, though.
- Yes, this can be done as long as you have no local laws about unregistered/uninsured vehicles. Florida had those laws and they would give you 3 days to get everything done or get rid of the vehicle.
