Why do I have to pay for insurance on four cars when I can only drive one at a time?

I just found a website that stated "In America car insurance insures the driver, not the car". Does anyone actually sell insurance for a driver; regardless of what car they drive?

  1. If they are not insured and sitting somewere and a tree falls on them why should the insurance cover them if they only cover you?
  2. If the car has a current valid license plate & registration then you must have insurance on it... I have 4 cars & 2 motorcycles, all insured, and I can only drive one at a time...
  3. That statement is incorrect. Insurance follows the CAR not the driver. Your insuring agreement with your insurance company will state the same. No company would sell insurance for a driver, rather than the car. Insurance premiums are determined based on the type of the vehicle plus the risk of the driver. Therefore you cannot just insure a driver.
  4. Not any more thanks to drunk drivers & liability issues. But what you can do is this( I know I have 3 cars) Insure the ones you drive regulary like the wifes & yours thaen the other you can carry as well but in a suspended status. It's covered as long as you dont drive it just like the others(Daily) then when you do want to use it just call your agent and have them switch the two around from active & inactive. JUST DONT DRIVE IT IN AN INACTIVE POLICY STATE!! If you do & something happens (accident) it is not considered an insured vehicle because the policy status is listed as inactive. Ask your agent for better details. BTW this inactive status thing does not cost as much as full liability coverage.
  5. Some companies do. I went through a period for a while when I did not own a vehicle myself but due to state regulations I had to have insurance to renew my drivers license. I do not remember the company I used but it was very expensive cause they were basing the policy on a high end vehicle.
  6. You are like everyone else by having to insure what you bought. If you can only drive one vehicle at a time, sell the other three and then you won't have to pay for the insurance. But, if you want to keep all of them you will have to pay for the insurance
