what criteria does a car need to meet to qualify for classic insurance?

- Try Haggerty Insurance, CO... they are the ones that sponsor the big classic car auctions and specialize in classic car insurance.
- 25 Years old
- It depends on your state and insurance company. I was able to find a couple sources of insurance for less than $150/year but they have rather strict rules. For example, I'm limited to a 250 mile driving radius, no more than 1500 miles per year, no trailer hitch, no hauling, storage in a fixed building, and no additional drivers. My truck is 49 years old, so it was no problem meeting the 20+ year age requirement. I was not required to have an antique vehicle license plate, but it was worth it to get it. In Texas it costs ~$50 for a 5 year plate, and it exempts the vehicle from inspection and emissions testing. As a trade-off, I can't drive the vehicle except for car-related purposes such as a cruise, car show, maintenance, etc. Without the antique designation, it would cost about $50/year, plus inspections. I bought my insurance through my "regular" insurance provider, who underwrote the policy with a classic vehicle insurance company. (That way, I only deal with MY company.) I recommend starting with your current company, and then getting some quotes from other classic insurance companies for comparison. Check out the link below. The insurance companies insure all types of collectible vehicles. JC Taylor is probably the most well-known. (No endorsement.) There are about a dozen links just for the US. Each company should specify their requirements. Also look at the tips link for some helpful information. Good luck!
- different companies would have different guidlines concerning age, condition and use of the vehicle. you'll have to call around to a few companies to get an idea or just call a local agent.
- Depends on the insurer, there is no age defined for "classic" unlike vintage and veteran. Generally though about 20 years is accepted for most cars, but if you have an out of production car less than that, say the old mini, which may only be a 10 year old car, can be acceptable purely because the mini is a classic in its own right. The other criteria is if it is worth a bit more than the average for that year, then you need to arrange an agreed value with the insurer, usually this is assessed from a set of photographs. For example, and original 30 year old car in tip top condition will be of more interest, than a worn out model of the same age. You won't qualify for a no claims bonus, and they will expect you to be a member of an appropriate owners club to demonstrate that you are an enthusiast. They assume you will be very fond of the vehicle, look after it well and drive it carefully hence they can offer lower premiums. They will also want an agreed annual mileage limit. They may offer salvage also, thus they will sell you back the car if "written off" if you want to rebuild it or use the good parts on another car
- Try to seach it on the net.. You can try to visit this cheap car insurance site http://www.nightbirdssolutions.com for your reference.
- Usually, it has to be at least 'x' number of years old and is considered pleasure use, not a daily driver.
- pre 1975, less than 3000 miles a year and must be garaged. If you are unfortunate to be involved in an accident etc., for an agreed accidental value you must submit photos and copies of your service history to show the vehicle is worth what you say it is at the time of inception of the insurance policy.
