Does my credit card cover me for rental car insurance?

I don't have a car, so I don't have car insurance. I'm going to rent a car for four days, and I wonder if I have to purchase the insurance. I have two credit cards. One is a Chase Amazon Visa. I called and they said I'm covered as long as I pay with the card and decline the rental company's insurance (the woman I spoke to mentioned waiving CDW and LDW). They listed Auto Rental Damage Collision Waiver (Secondary) and Damage to Collision of Theft (I think)--but is this only if I already have insurance? I also have a SunTrust Platinum Plus Visa. It seems to offer: # Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver, Travel Accident Insurance, and Travel and Emergency Assistance Services, though I'm not sure about the last one (it's listed in one place on the Website but not in another). Do I need to get any insurance with my rental? The options they offer are: Loss Damage Waiver (LDW), Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) and Personal Accident and Effects (PAE). Which, if any, do I need?

  1. You did fine by waiving the insurance offered by the rental company. It's a big moneymaker for the rentals and 99% of the time, it's not needed. You are covered.
  2. ask YOUR credit card company We cannot answer this question.
