  1. The PT Cruiser. Until recently I worked as an insurance appraiser. I actually looked this up and found out that the PT Cruiser has a lower loss ratio than everything else. They seldom get stolen, and for some reason, they don't get in as many accidents, so from a loss-experience standpoint, insurance companies charge less to insure them. Go figure . . .
  2. In the UK you're best bet is to get a small car like a Citroen Saxo, Ford Fiesta or Pug 106. You should try to keep the engine small (i.e. anything under a 1.4 and/or 100bhp). Try to get one with a Thatcham approved security system or at least a factory fitted standard security system (as it will bring down your premiums). DON'T modify it as that will put your car insurance through the roof. Finally going through the pass plus scheme will also bring insurance costs down. That said at 17 you are still a very high risk driver & would still be looking at a premium worth more than the car! I had a 1.1 Ford Fiesta when I was 18 & it still cost me £1100 to insure the car even though I only had 3rd party insurance & the car was worth nothing!
  3. Minivans are cheaper then other vehicles for insurance. However, unless you're on your parents policy, you are going to pay an arm and a leg for any vehicle.
  4. You can check insurance group ratings at http://www.abi.org.uk/carinsurance/search.asp - the lower the group, the cheaper the insurance. The best thing to do is get a quote through a insurance comparison website like http://www.confused.com and then keep changing the make and model of the car to see the price difference.
  5. at 17 - im guessing this must be your first car - so as a rule i would stick to something small, ie micra, saxo, peugot 106 / 107?? (cant remember which end number they are now-a-days), with an engine size of around 1000cc mark - basically as small as possible - but be sensible, think of something that's not your typical 'boy-racer' car aswell, there's no point making yourself an easy target for car theives (if you do the car up) or the police if they see you. my first car (after i had driven on my parents' insurance for 1 year) was a 1.3l nissan micra, i believe it cost me £600ish - but this was 11years ago, i progressed onto a 1.6l ford escort then a 3l x-type jaguar - so just because you start small / sensible - doesnt mean you have to stay that way
  6. You're best bet is to get a smaller car something like Ford Fiesta, Puget 106 or Nissan Micra. Go for the smaller engine size under 1.4 / (1400cc) You can check prices on line on some of the motoring web sites like Auto trade or Loot. To find the cheapest car insurance it’s a good idea to shop around with so many companies and brokers its hard find good prices. You can start by using a comparison web site or ever compare the comparison sites. These sites are very easy to use you just enter your details once and they get quotes from 100’s of companies and brokers. I used a web site called www.CarInsurance.biz they have links to most of the comparison sites and car insurance companies.
