Do I add new teen driver to car insurance??

Is there a legal obligation to add a new teen driver to an existing policy if he/she lives home? The driver is technically covered anyway.

  1. Don't know what your state law is but in CA you must list all drivers living in the home.
  2. Yes, you do have to add the teen driver. Because they live in your home, they are not automatically covered as a driver under your policy like someone else would be. It is going to raise your premiums, but there are discounts you can try for that will help lessen the blow. :-)
  3. To be covered, the teen must be listed as a part time driver, otherwise, you must put an exclusion on the policy, restricting the teen from driving the vehicle. One or the other must take place since the teen lives in the home, is of legal age to drive(whether licensed or not)and has access to the vehicle/s on your property(you can't babysit them 24/7).
  4. Most insurance policies cover guest drivers, but these usually only apply to adults and not to people who live at the same address. If it were possible to not add a new teen driver to an existing policy, then the insurance companies would have no way of charging extra for teen drivers who present a higher risk. So the answer is YES, you must add teen drivers to your policy. I don't know what you mean by "technically covered anyway".
