Car insurance for a teen?

Ok, here's my situation. I'm 15, male, in Florida. i know insurace for a male teen is generally high, so i have some questions. Currently I have a job and I'm saving up so I'll be able to buy a car when I'm 16. I will be paying for the car, gas, and insurance. Of course, I will be added to my mom's policy and I will pay her the difference. Here's the problem. I like to fish, so it would be nice to have a small pickup truck that gets relatively good gas mileage... Like a 4 cyl chevy s10 or ford ranger. About what would be the difference in, oh say an older honda Civic and a mid to late 90's chevy s10 or ford ranger? I get good grades, i know some insurance companies give discounts for that. What can I expect to pay monthly for insurance, and how much more would you think a small truck would be than a small car (probably with as minimum coverage as possible, i'd be a safe driver)? Ballpark estimates, all help is greatly appreciated. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! -CTK- narcissa, what is that supposed to mean? Honestly, if you can't say something at least somewhat informative, don't even bother answering. You guys are acting like i want a quote... i just wanted a ballpark estimate on what to expect... geez

  1. Why don't you just call the agent that your parents are using and ask him these questions? The agent can get you the answer you need, all you'll get on this site is a bunch of crap from people who really don't know. Always go to the source and if you don't want to ask your parents agent, look in the phone book and pick one out yourself. Your parents agent could get you the best deal of all though.
  2. I agree with the first answer. Were not insurance agents. There are a lot of things to consider that will affect your rates. Ask the pros.not a bunch of people that can only guess.
  3. ok, if you are planning to purchase the vehicle outright and only carry liability then it makes no difference if you drive a pickup or a corvette. liability is the same price no matter what you drive becuase you are not insuring your car, only to pay for other cars you may cause damage to. since you are so young, this is the BEST way to go. If you have to carry full coverage, its going to be VERY high and you probably will not be able to afford paying the difference on a part time job. the cost of the liability depends on the liability limits your mother is carrying on her policy. your car will be carrying what her autos carry across the board for the liability. if she is carrying minimums you are looking at about 1000-1500 every six months.
