Does your insurance cover your new car purchase?
Example, I have insurance on 2 cars, but I just bought a new car and I have not added the car to the policy. Does my insurance still cover the purchased veichle?

- It depends on the state. I know my state give you 72 hours from the time of purchase to add the vehicle to the policy. You need to find out what your state guidelines are. The finance manager at the dealership you bought the car from should also be able to answer this question.
- my state covers for 30 days.
- Most states allow it to be covered for up to 30 days (same length of time to get your new tags). It is best to call your insurance company as soon as you can though.
- It will but you need to call the information in to your agent for coverage to be effective.
- Almost ALL ins co's have that "automatic" coverage of a new or replacement (rental) car. My co wants to be notified within ten days. You can do it over the phone.
- so call them with the vin...could have done it faster then time wasted screwing around on the net.
- In Manitoba, if you trade a car in, you have coverage on the new vehicle for 7 days. However, if you trade in a K-Car for a Bentley, and write it off, you will only get $50,000 because your standard policy tops out at $50,000. So, if you trade way up, you need to do a transfer and pay the higher limit fee immediately. If you do not trade a car in, you can get a 7-day sticker from the dealer, which is temporary basic insurance as well as temporary registration. Every state and province has slightly different rules, contact your own broker to find out specifically. The state does not give you insurance, by the way. If your insurance company does not give you temporary coverage for a newly-aquired vehicle, then you do not have coverage. Call your agent.
- You are driving your new car uninsured. Add it immediately. If you had traded in your insured car for a new one, insurance MIGHT cover it for a short time, but since you bought a second vehicle, it is not covered. I'm surprised the dealer let you take it of the lot.
